Horizon vs QuantConnect

An open-source algorithmic trading platform where you research, backtest and trade strategies in Python. Here is how the two compare, question by question.

Checked against quantconnect.com on October 26, 2026

At a glance

QuantConnect and Horizon both take a strategy from an idea to live trading through your own broker, and they part ways on who writes the code. QuantConnect is built for people who code: you write the algorithm in Python on its LEAN engine, backtest it in the cloud and deploy it to a brokerage. Horizon builds the strategy from a plain-English description, shows you the rules it tested, and adds a marketplace of strategies that creators are running live.

  • You want to copy strategies that creators are running live, or publish your own and earn from subscribers.

Choose QuantConnect if

  • You write Python and want full control of the algorithm, down to order routing and custom data.

  • You want to run the engine on your own machine. LEAN is open source.

Moving from QuantConnect to Horizon

There is nothing to import. Three steps take a rule you run there to a strategy running here.

  1. Describe what your algorithm does in plain English in the Builder: the symbols, the signal, the entry, the exit and the risk limit.

  2. Review the strategy Horizon builds and its backtest, and compare its trades with your LEAN backtest.

  3. Run it on Horizon Paper, then connect your broker and turn it on.

Note : QuantConnect is described as its public site described it on October 26, 2026, and it may have changed since. QuantConnect is a trademark of its owner; Horizon is not affiliated with it. Details: quantconnect.com
