Anthropic lost $42 billion in 2025.

That is a remarkable number on its own. It becomes even more unusual when you compare it with other companies heading into the public markets.

So we tested it.

For every company, we used the same measure: net loss in the final completed fiscal year immediately before its IPO.

One company. One year. One number.

No selecting an earlier year because the loss happened to be larger. No mixing IPO-year losses with pre-IPO losses. No predecessor companies that never actually completed the listing.

The result is not particularly close.

The gap is enormous

Anthropic reported a $42 billion net loss in FY2025, its latest completed fiscal year ahead of its proposed IPO.

The next largest in our comparison was SpaceX, which lost $4.94 billion in FY2025 before its June 2026 listing.

After that:

  • General Motors: $4.3B
  • WeWork: $3.2B
  • Grab: $2.75B
  • Rivian: $1.0B
  • Uber: $1.0B
  • Lucid: $0.72B
  • Coupang: $0.47B

That makes Anthropic's reported loss roughly 8.5 times larger than the next biggest observation in the sample.

But there is an important catch

The $42 billion headline needs context.

Roughly $34 billion of Anthropic's loss was a non-cash accounting charge related to convertible financing.

Its operating loss was $8.06 billion.

That is a very different economic picture from a company simply burning $42 billion of cash during the year.

But even after stripping out that accounting effect, the scale remains unusual.

An $8.06 billion operating loss would still be larger than the total pre-IPO net losses of every other company in our comparison.

Why this matters

Large losses before an IPO are nothing new.

Uber, Rivian, WeWork and several other major listings reached public markets while losing billions of dollars.

What is different here is the scale.

The companies in our sample generally entered the public markets with prior-year losses measured somewhere between hundreds of millions and a few billion dollars.

Anthropic sits far outside that range.

And yet reports around its proposed listing have discussed a potential valuation of more than $2 trillion.

That combination is what makes the numbers interesting.

The $42 billion headline is heavily distorted by accounting charges, so it should not be treated as $42 billion of operating cash burn.

But whichever number you use, Anthropic would still be entering the public markets at a scale we have not really seen before.

$42 billion accounting loss. $8.06 billion operating loss. Potential $2 trillion-plus valuation.

The AI IPO cycle is producing numbers that make even the biggest loss-making listings of the last decade look small.
